Income Protection When You Need It

Short-Term Disability (STD) insurance is a valuable benefit designed to replace a portion of your income if you are temporarily unable to work due to a covered illness or injury.

Enrollment and Cost

Understanding Your Coverage

If you become disabled and your claim is approved, this policy provides a benefit that covers 60% of your gross weekly wages.

The Waiting Period (Elimination Period)

The “elimination period” is the length of time you must be disabled before benefits begin.

Once the required elimination period has been satisfied, benefits will commence. The maximum benefit is 26 weeks.

Filing a Claim and Supplementing Your Income

Requesting Leave and Filing a Claim

If you are currently enrolled in STD and preparing to file a claim, your first step should be to contact your Benefits Coordinator in Human Resources to receive the required paperwork. Both you and your physician must complete and return this paperwork to initiate the claim process.

Supplementing Your Income

Since the policy only covers 60% of your wages, you may choose to use any accrued sick and/or vacation time to supplement the remaining 40% of your income.

Important Note

Be aware that your STD benefits may be reduced if you are receiving income from other sources, such as Workers’ Compensation or Social Security Disability.
