Cornbread and Tortillas to Perform at Berea College

April 5, 2024

By Paula Keshderian

BEREA, Ky. – A collective of Appalachian and Latino artists from Kentucky Cornbread and Tortillas will perform on April 11 during Berea College's weekly convocations.

“Cornbread and Tortillas” combines music, theatre, dance and storytelling to build a community and create unity in this diverse world.

The signature show, “Cornbread and Tortillas,” is a theatrical devised from the life stories of the performing artists. It includes stories, music and dancing journeys from Appalachia to Mexico, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Greece. The show is an exploration of connection and celebration of shared human experiences.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome back Cornbread & Tortillas to Berea College,” said Director of Convocations Dr. Thomas Ahrens. “Their beautiful, bilingual performance featuring stories, music and dance about the human experience delighted our audience in 2019 and will undoubtedly pique the interest of a new cohort of students and community members.”

The convocation begins at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. It is free and open to the public.

About Berea College

Berea College, the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, focuses on learning, labor and service. The College only admits academically promising students with limited financial resources, primarily from Kentucky and Appalachia, although students come from 45 states and 70 countries. Every Berea student receives a Tuition Promise Scholarship, which means no Berea student pays for tuition. Berea is one of nine federally recognized Work Colleges, where students work at least 10 hours a week to earn money for books, housing, and meals. The College’s motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth,” speaks to its inclusive Christian character. www.berea.edu
