The mission of the Berea College Department of Risk Management and Environmental Health and Safety is to protect people, the environment and property, in support of Berea College’s mission and reputation. This is accomplished by:

Environmental Health and Safety provides occupational and environmental health and safety services to all faculty, students and staff, including maintaining compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations related to occupational health and safety, environmental conservation and protection, and laboratory safety. Environmental Health and Safety also provides information and training programs, and environmental health and safety consulting and auditing services.

Policies and Programs

Berea College is committed to the health and safety of its employees, students, and visitors. The college will promote the development and maintenance of programs to identify and prevent safety hazards and promote environmental health on our campus. All campus-related facilities, activities, and programs shall be designed, conducted and operated in a manner which reasonably protects human health, safety and the environment in compliance with applicable environmental health and safety laws and regulations.

Toolbox

Environmental Health Safety works with the Berea College Facilities Department on all indoor air quality concerns. The Indoor Air Quality Program outlines procedure for response to various indoor air quality concerns and to prevent potentially unhealthy conditions from occurring at the College including the Flood Response and Mold Prevention Program. Campus Waste Generation Guidelines

Environmental Health and Safety manages the disposal of chemical and biological waste from Berea facilities, in accordance with federal, state and local regulations. There are specific procedures for handling, storage and disposal for different types of waste and different areas of the College. Berea College is permitted by the Kentucky Division of Air Quality as a Conditional Major Source, Permit ID: F-12-037. Please contact the Environmental Health and Safety Department if you have any questions concerning the site operating permit.

The hot work permit is written procedures to prevent fires resulting from any temporary operation involving open flames or producing heat and/or sparks, as required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252, 29 CFR 1926.352 and NFPA Standard 51B.

Berea College is providing students, staff and faculty the opportunity to subscribe to the e2Campus service. E2Campus enables subscribers to receive alert messages as mobile phone text messages, e-mails, and/or phone calls. There is no charge for the service beyond the normal cost of mobile phone text messages. Messages will be issued as authorized under the Campus Emergency Response Plan.

Safety and emergency alert messages will be sent to all subscribers in the event of tornado warnings, an active shooter situation, a hazardous chemical spill or other emergencies where immediate notification may help avoid harm. Non-emergency warning messages will continue to be sent via campus e-mail to provide timely notification of threatening weather, a violent crime report or other potential dangers, but subscribers can choose to receive these warning messages via the e2Campus system as well.
